Home Internet Troubleshooting Checklist
Use this step-by-step checklist to narrow down common home internet problems without guessing.
1. Define the problem
Is one website failing or every website? Is one device affected or every device? Does the problem happen on Wi-Fi only or also on Ethernet? The answers point to different fixes.
2. Test another device and network
Try another browser, another device, and mobile data. This quickly separates website problems from home network problems.
3. Run a speed test
Test near the router, then test in the room where you have trouble. Record download, upload, and ping. A big difference between rooms usually means Wi-Fi coverage is the issue.
4. Restart equipment
Unplug modem and router, wait 60 seconds, plug the modem in first, then the router. Wait for the connection to fully return before testing again.
5. Look for background usage
Game downloads, backups, camera uploads, and streaming can quietly use bandwidth. Pause them and retest.
6. Collect evidence
If the issue remains, write down times, devices, wired vs Wi-Fi results, and speed test results. This makes provider support calls much more productive.
