Public vs Private IP Address
Your public IP address is what websites see. Your private IP address is used inside your home or office network.
Public IP address
Your public IP address is assigned by your internet provider and is visible to websites and online services when your network connects to them. In most homes, every device shares one public IP through the router.
Public IP addresses can change unless you have a static IP. VPNs, mobile networks, and some wireless providers can make the visible address or location look different than expected.
Private IP address
Private IP addresses are used inside your local network. Common examples start with 192.168, 10, or 172.16 through 172.31. Your phone, laptop, printer, and TV usually have private addresses assigned by the router.
Why it matters
Remote access, port forwarding, printer sharing, and troubleshooting all depend on knowing which address you are dealing with. A website usually sees your public IP. A printer or router inside your home uses private IP addresses.
